2010 Waters Off Program Helps Elderly and Disabled

Low-income seniors and disabled homeowners get free plumbing help

Professional union plumber volunteers participating in the 2010 Water’s Off Project on Saturday, March 26th in the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, and Rochester, provided minor plumbing repairs and safety inspections were made free of charge for low-income senior and disabled homeowners. 200 Union plumbers from Minneapolis/St. Cloud Plumbers Local 15, St. Paul/Mankato Plumbers Local 34, Rochester Plumbers Local 6, along with the Minnesota Mechanical Contractors Association participated in the 2010 Water’s Off Project.   Minnesota union plumbers serviced homes around the state. Water's Off targets assistance to low-income and disabled homeowners.  Qualifying households are identified through the Minnesota Valley Action Council, a local human services organization. Bob Hansen, business manager of Minneapolis Plumbers Local 15 said, “Many times people allow minor plumbing problems to go on because they don’t feel they can afford to have a leak fixed, unfortunately this may lead to more significant problems and that’s not to mention the money spent on excessive water usage bills and wasted water. That’s where our members can make a difference to these homeowners.”  Steve Pettersen, executive vice-president of the Minnesota Mechanical Contractors Association said, “The Water's Off Project brings together unions, business and government in a partnership where seniors and disabled homeowners are the beneficiaries."

Saturday, September 18, and Saturday, November 13 members of Plumbers local #15 volunteered their time to assist Place of Hope Ministries of St. Cloud with the completion of the plumbing project for their transitory housing. Place of Hope Ministries is completely funded by private contributions, providing transitory housing for individuals and families in financial trouble.  At Place of Hope Ministries, families or individuals rent a room giving them shelter, and opportunity to build their credit once again, helping them regain the ability to provide for themselves. The materials were donated by the Minnesota Mechanical Contractors Association, and Goodin Company. Thank you both for your generosity. We would also like to thank the ten plumbers who gave two of their Saturdays to help with this worthy project.
